Where passion meets expertise
Step into our showroom at 399 Strand — situated between the Savoy Hotel and the Vaudeville Theatre, a short walk from Charing Cross and Covent Garden — and you’ll immediately sense something different. It isn’t just a shop or an auction house; it’s where collectors gather, stories unfold and discoveries happen every single day. Our specialists light up when they talk about a rare 1840 Penny Black, an ancient Roman coin, a military medal with an extraordinary story or a gleaming gold sovereign.
Two parallel journeys
1840 was a remarkable year for collecting: the Penny Black was issued, and Stanley Gibbons was born. By 1856, sixteen-year-old Stanley had convinced his father to let him add a stamp counter to the family chemist shop in Plymouth. The first Stanley Gibbons catalogue followed in 1865, and in 1901 the first lot went under the hammer at the newly founded Stanley Gibbons Auction House. In 1914 the firm was appointed Philatelists to King George V, and in 1956 it was granted a Royal Warrant by Queen Elizabeth II as Philatelists and Stamp Dealers to the Royal Household.
In 1872, A.H. Baldwin & Sons opened its doors, establishing what would become one of the world’s most respected numismatic dealers, developing relationships with collectors, museums and institutions that continue to this day, and expanding across ancient coins, British pieces, world currencies and military medals.
A new chapter
In 2013 Baldwin’s joined the Stanley Gibbons Group; by 2014 it had relocated to 399 Strand alongside Stanley Gibbons’ legendary stamp showroom, and in 2019 the new Coin Room opened. Baldwin’s precious-metals expertise evolved into Baldwin’s Bullion, and Complete Collector emerged as the insights hub. Stanley Gibbons Baldwin’s is the fusion of both legacies: stamps, coins, medals, trading cards, comics, bullion and militaria under one roof.
Our specialists
We are proud members of the Philatelic Traders’ Society, with three members of our team serving on the British Philatelic Association committee. Our coin specialists include Neil Paisley (Managing Director, Baldwin’s Coins), Dominic Chorney (Head of Ancient Coins), Ema Sikic (Head of World & Islamic Coins) and Richard Gladdle (Professional Numismatist); George James leads our philatelists as Head of Philately; and our medals and militaria team includes Mark Smith of BBC’s Antiques Roadshow, a member of the Orders and Medals Research Society. The business is led by CEO Iain Murphy, with Edward Barrow as Auction Manager.
