FAQ

Answers to the questions we’re asked most often by buyers and sellers.

General

What is an auction estimate?
A professional valuation of an item’s potential sale price, based on market trends and previous sales. The final sale price may be higher or lower than the estimate.

What is a reserve price?
The confidential minimum amount the seller is willing to accept for an item.

What types of auctions do you hold?
Live auctions (in person or online) and timed online auctions with set closing dates. Live auctions take place in real time with an auctioneer; timed auctions are online only, and the highest bid placed before the deadline wins.

What are your customer service hours?
Monday to Friday, 9:00am to 5:00pm.

Buyers

Can I view the item before bidding?
Yes, during scheduled viewing times listed in the auction catalogue. Private viewings can be arranged by contacting auctions@sgbaldwins.com.

How do I know if an item is authentic?
All items are carefully authenticated by our team of experts. You also have the option to purchase an item “on extension”, which means it will be sent to a recognised expertisation body for certification.

Is there a buyer’s premium?
Yes, a 23% buyer’s premium is applied to all lots. VAT may also be applicable depending on the location of the lot.

How will I know if I’ve won?
For live auctions, the auctioneer announces the winning paddle number. Invoices are sent within 3 hours of the auction’s conclusion.

How long do I have to pay?
Payment is required within 7 days of receiving your invoice. Failure to pay within 30 days may result in cancellation of the sale and restriction from future auctions.

Sellers

How do I sell with you?
The process begins with a free valuation. We’ll advise on the most suitable auction and our team will handle all aspects, from cataloguing to marketing.

What am I charged as a seller?
Commission rates are tailored to each seller and discussed during the consignment process. Commission is subject to standard UK VAT.

When will my item go to auction?
We strive to include your items in the next suitable auction. Consignment typically begins several months before the auction date to allow time for cataloguing and promotion.

What is the difference between Post-Sale Advice and a Settlement?
Post-Sale Advice is sent within 3 hours of the auction’s conclusion with hammer prices for your items. Settlement follows after the sale, outlining your payment after deducting any applicable fees and commissions; payments are processed 35 days after the auction, provided the buyer has paid.
