Conditions of Sale
Each Stanley Gibbons Baldwin’s auction is conducted under the terms and conditions published with that sale. By registering to bid, in person or online, you accept those terms together with the conditions below.
Buyer’s premium and VAT
From 1 December 2025, buyer’s premium is charged at 23% of the final hammer price of each lot, with VAT to be charged in addition if applicable. VAT is chargeable on the buyer’s premium at the standard rate (currently 20%). Lots subject to 20% VAT on the hammer price are indicated by the symbol ∑ next to the estimate, and lots subject to 5% import tax on the hammer price for buyers in the UK by the † symbol next to the lot number. Investment gold is exempt from VAT, but buyer’s premium is still applied at the current rate.
VAT refunds
We remain liable to account for VAT on all lots unless they are exported outside the UK within 3 months of the date of sale, so you will generally be asked to deposit all amounts of VAT invoiced. To apply for a refund, the proof of export certificate must be sent to our Administration Department clearly marked ‘VAT Refund’ within 3 months of the date of sale. No payment will be made where the total VAT refundable is less than £50.
Private sale agreements
If you enter into a private sale agreement with the seller of a lot offered in our auction within 60 days of the auction, we reserve the right, as exclusive agents of the seller, to charge you the applicable buyer’s premium and the seller a commission.
Payment
Payment is required within 7 days of receiving your invoice; failure to pay within 30 days may result in cancellation of the sale and restriction from future auctions. We accept bank transfer, online card payment and, in person at 399 Strand, card or cash (photo ID required; lifetime cash limit £8,300). We do not accept American Express or cheques.
Shipping and collection
Items are shipped by Special Delivery with full insurance once payment is complete, with postage and packing added to your invoice. Lots may be collected from 399 Strand, Monday to Saturday, 9:30am–6:00pm, without appointment.
